Standby-->Virginia Alone

On April 1st I am going to take down Standby so if you would like to see it before it goes then you have a few days.  I will then begin building a new project called Virginia Alone which will take at least a few months.  A portion of it will be shown at the Santa Fe International New Media Festival that runs between June 22nd and July 8th.   Have a look at the quality of works from the 2011 show and you will know why I am all stressed out and need to get this started.

More info when we get closer to the opening!

shake fist!

A while ago I discovered a movie called "I'm here" which is a short film by Spike Jonze.  I really enjoyed its strange sweet quirkiness.  It can be seen online here ... and after you put in your birthday it will bring you to the front of a movie theatre.  Just click the ticket booth spot and it will show you a monitor that tells you how many views are available for watching the movie.  Each day has a limited number.  Click that and off you go.  You will probably watch it and say "well of course you like it Bryn it is similar to your own freaking stories!" and I would shake my fist at you and say "hey you wouldn't be on my blog if you didn't like them too!" and you might grumble a bit then watch the movie.

And in other news the entire town of Buford is for sale in Wyoming.  You can have it all including a gas station, convenience store, a 1905 schoolhouse, a cabin, a garage, 10 acres of land, a three-bedroom home and so on.  Perfect for the SLer accustomed to the post apocalyptic feeling of wandering deserted malls.

Unity 3D

A long time ago someone suggested I look into Unity 3D to make a video game for the Rabbicorn story or Annas Many Murders, and a short time ago I finally went to go look at it.  Now when they suggested I make a video game my first reaction was a mild eye twitch as I considered adding -Learn to make video games to my long list of things I need to get done.  I mean it took me months just to go download it and now I am to learn what must be a very complex process?   Well it is not as difficult as I had imagined, not that I have loads of time to spend on it right now but still.
When you look at examples of Unity you will see someone with a gun shooting something gleefully.  That seems to be what it is being used for and that is not surprising at all since when I visit my friends they almost always are playing something shooty.  I end up having to play their shooties like Halo and I am just terrible at it.  They get me before I even know they are around.  My strategy has evolved to hiding in hard to see places and stabbing people with a big laser sword when they walk by.  They even call me "the crab" because of it, but they quickly become wise to my whereabouts due to the corpses strewn inside my hidey lair.  Ah for the days before my friends got video games and we used to go outside.  There was this thing called "the sky" I found appealing.
So yes back to Unity, on the surface it looks just like something to make video games and it is.. but I also want to find out if it could be made to function more like an interactive storybook.  The graphics are gorgeous and in just a few minutes I was able to import Gretchen from my machinima Gretchen and Teddy.  The only negative is that I can't afford all the additional licenses involved.  There is a license for ipads and phones etc. and the other problem is that you seem to need to purchase some types of content from a store unless you want to make everything yourself (which is probably what I would do)
Anyway below is an example of Unity without shooting and here is a place you can download it... Unity 3D

Annas Many Murders on Originalia

A while ago the talented Eliza Wierwight introduced me to Amase Levasseur who owns Originalia.  After a few discussions Amase very graciously offered me Originalia to build on, and after thinking about what to do I decided to put down Annas Many Murders.

Here is the SLURL

I thought up Anna while riding on the subway.  I was listening to my Ipod on a very crowded train when, to my dismay, its battery died.   I was taken out of my little world of music while everyone else on the train was still blissfully immersed in theirs.  Looking around I was greeted by an almost complete human silence with just the sounds of creaking and bumping from the Subway.  It was as though everyone had receded into their own bubble of awareness that provided entertainment but also helped prevent the dreaded "interaction" with strangers.  Weirdos generally don't accost you when you have headphones on because well... they assume you can't hear them.  That doesn't actually work in Toronto because they talk to you anyway, because when the end is nigh then I guess the end is nigh regardless of headphones.

It was a bit disturbing actually as the train was quite full but so strangely quiet.  Almost like that old invasion of the body snatchers movie where all the pod people or whatever they were only really communicated verbally for appearances.  I began to daydream, as I often do, and started to picture a world of the future where we didn't carry around accessories such as Blackberries, video games, ipods, ebooks and so on, but rather had them surgically implanted.  We would just keep upgrading our own bodies or rather the foreign components in our bodies.

So for example if you were walking down the street and decided to pick up a loaf of nice raisin bread you would perhaps first find a gps location of the closest bakery.  In your eye app you would see a path appear for you to follow to find that bakery.  As you got closer your nose app would smell the aroma and info on how long ago the bread was made, how many calories and perhaps customer ratings would be given to you.

The story is about Anna, a not so stable person, who sees the dehumanization of those around her and copes in her own way.  It is not a black and white story of good and evil but rather a tale about a quiet girl who finds herself an outcast and reacts in the greys of madness.

The jurors find Anna with one of their own.  She has removed his chest app and placed a tiny plant inside.  In her mind she sees what she is doing as helping but to everyone else it is a horror.

"Shopping bags blowing
in the sky,
she'd pretend
were butterflies"

Her reality is different from everyone else, and as she goes through the levels of society she deals with them in a very final way.  Quiet, shy and unstoppable is Anna.
