Musings on Star Wars

In a bit of mind blowing news it would appear that Disney has purchased the rights to Star Wars from George Lucas for 4 billion or so.   As a child my three older brothers would watch the 1970's versions of those movies what seemed like every day.  When I got older I remember getting really excited when I had heard that new Star Wars movies were coming out.  I think childhood routines and memories get somewhat elevated into magic when you grow up and long for those same nostalgic experiences.  So I rushed out to see the Phantom Menace movie with friends when it first came out in the theater.  I had my extremely salty popcorn and fizzy drink and I was sitting in my favorite spot in the theater,  the lights dimmed and the red curtains opened to that most awesome Star Wars theme music.  I was incredibly excited and hey I am not a Star Wars nut.  It just seemed historic.  So yeah that was the best part of the movie, it kind of went downhill from there.  Afterwords my friends and I walked in silence for a bit before I hesitantly suggested the movie was shit.  I mean I felt like I had just said that mother Theresa was an arsehole.  I wasn't sure if there would be instant backlash and I would end up walking home alone,  but no it kind of opened up some floodgates and all were in agreement it sucked.   The following two movies got a wee bit better but meh.  George lost it, the legacy of Star Wars went from two awesome fun movies and a Muppet show episode called Return of the Jedi to two good movies out of six.  Last Halloween at a party I attended, people were drunk and discussing how the franchise should be taken away from Georgio and given to someone else to revive.  People were daydreaming about directors like Peter Jackson (LOTR), James Cameron (Avatar), the Wachowski brothers (The Matrix), Guillermo Del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth) or my outlandish pick which would be Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away).  Anyway it was all just fantasy talk until well .. today.  As long as Disney doesn't make them into wholesome Sunday afternoon movies then it should be an upgrade.  Disney is quite capable of messing these up too but fingers crossed.

Zet Avril at FELAFACS

Zet Avril did a great presentation on Second Life machimima at the University of Lima for FELAFACS 2012.

I really liked the way the camera would zoom into things like Bryn Oh's eye to show a machinima.  It is pretty useful that the actual machinima can be embedded into the presentation in this manner.  I know she put in a great deal of work for this so congratulations Zet I am glad it went well for you.

Still life with Mark Rothko beating the crap out of Vladimir Umanets

I have known a gentleman named Kueperpunk Korhonen for quite some time now.  We first met ages ago as members of a now dead art collective called Caerleon.  He is an accomplished cyberpunk author and has put together Festival der Liebe which celebrates virtual art, writers, musicians and photography.

The whole schedule of events over the three days can be found here..  Schedule

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Ataria/52/134/81

I have created a fun little build for the festival called "Still life with Mark Rothko beating the crap out of Vladimir Umanets"  I think it is a potential piece of yellowism.

If you hadn't heard, a work by Mark Rothko was damaged at the Tate Modern not long ago.  The work Black on Maroon was written on in marker by Vladimir Umanets. He wrote "Vladimir Umanets (just make it difficult for the police to find you!) A potential piece of yellowism"  Yellowism being his self created art movement or style.

What I liked about Black on Maroon was that it was originally commissioned by the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York city.  When asked what his intentions were for this series he said..

“I hope to paint something that will ruin the appetite of every son of a bitch who ever eats in that room,”

How can you not like that response in our day of media coached actors and sports figures who never actually say anything of substance for fear of someone being offended.  Rothko didn't just say something politically incorrect but rather took direct aim at his patron and their clientele.  It makes me giggle it does.

Anyway,  so in my virtual world Mark gets to meet Vlad and discuss the finer points of Yellowism.

Virtual world performance at LEA

The LEA is ready to begin taking applications for those who work in the performing arts. We are intentionally leaving the criteria open as we would like to see what type of art performances are proposed without having a preconceived notion of what to expect.   Show us what virtual world performance art can be.  We will try to accommodate as many styles or visions as possible given the space and calendar. Some shows can be large productions lasting months or you can apply for a single half hour show. Let us know what you need and we will try to find a way to fit it in.

The application can be found here http://lea.aviewtv.com/performance.html

Virtual Ability has been building communities of support for people with disabilities in virtual worlds since 2007. About three quarters of the group members have one or more kinds of disability (physical, mental, emotional, or sensory) or chronic illness; the rest are temporarily-able-bodied family members, caregivers, professionals, researchers, students, and others interested in disability issues.

Virtual Ability helps enable people with a wide range of disabilities by providing a supporting environment for them to enter and thrive in online virtual worlds.  They provide SL residents with customized orientation and training at award-winning Virtual Ability Island. There, new residents can learn SL fundamentals in an accessibility-friendly environment, and existing residents can receive ongoing training and information about health-related issues and support groups.

In RL, Virtual Ability, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation based in Colorado, USA.  They are the leading provider of services and information for people with disabilities in virtual worlds, and conduct outreach and awareness activities to inform people with disabilities or chronic health conditions, their family and friends, medical professionals, and other caregivers of the benefits virtual worlds can provide.
